32 degrees is considered freezing, this morning is was 25 degrees outside. I think it's safe to say even without the snow winter is here. Winter isn't usually a time of year when you think about getting roof work done but sometimes you just don't have a choice. Below we will tell you some of those warning signs you just can't put off until spring.
Ice Dams are the most talked about and obvious of the winter warning signs. If you see ice dams built up on your roof there is already a problem. While there are plenty of home remedies, and they may just get you through till the spring, it's still a good idea to call a trusted professional to make sure your roof is safe until then.
Ponding occurs when standing water stays on a roof for more than 48 hours. Usually occurring on flat or low angle roofs it can also be found on gabled roofs that feature dormers or valleys. These are areas where poorly insulated/vented and already damaged roofs can form ice dams and pooling during freeze/thaw cycles- Something we experience quite often in southern Michigan.
Ice dams, pooling water, freeze/thaw cycles, you are definitely looking at a winter roof leak at this point. Some safe ways you can look for signs of a roof leak is to look under it looking for signs of water or moisture getting though. Rusted nails and wet insulation are also tell tail signs that you have an active leak even when water isn't present.
The best way to fight condensation is a with a well insulated and ventilated attic. Your attic space separates the cold air outside from the warm air inside your homes living are and acts as a buffer. Moisture and condensation attack your roof from the inside and in winter can frost over and create a bigger mess like the picture above.
